Why isn’t fioricet a controlled substance?

Fioricet contains tylenol, caffeine, butalbital. Its sister drug, Fiorinal is schedule III. The only difference is fioricet contains tylenol as a component while fiorinal instead has aspirin. This is not a valid reason for the unscheduling of fioricet. Both contain the same habit forming drug, butalbital. Can someone please explain.

Chosen Answer:

I don’t have the answer to your specific question, but I would have to disagree with n-burk. Tylenol is potentially more dangerous than aspirin because a relatively smaller overdose of Tylenol can cause fatal liver damage a lot faster than aspirin can cause any of its side effects.

which medication cant be taken with fioricet?

i currently take:
Femara 2.5 mg
Necon
Vitamin D 1000 IU
Calcium 500mg
Ambien 10 mg

now which one(s) shouldnt be taken with Fioricet, if any?

Addition info:
the fioricet says its 3 meds in one: butlbtl/apap/caff 50/325/40 TB

Chosen Answer:

Don’t take more acetaminophen, MAOI’s, more caffeine, otc cold and cough medicines with psuedoephedrine in them (w/o talking to your MD) and if you take the Ambien and Fiorcet at the same time, you may feel more tired, so you probably shouldn’t go out and operate any heavy machinery on both of them if you are all wonky from the combo. I’ve never read anything about vitamin or hormone/birth control reactions with Fiorcet, but then again, I am not a doctor. So maybe you should consider asking him.

Is the headache medicine Fioricet addictive ? I hope I am not taking too many?

Chosen Answer:

In terms of addiction yes. But, if you only take it occasionally Fioricet has less addiction potential than most pure narcotics. You did not say how many you have been taking to know if you are taking too many. Hope I helped. :)

fioricet during pregnancy?

I have been having severe headaches for about the last 3 weeks or so. I am 21.5 weeks pregnant. Today i had my monthly appt with my OB and she prescribed me fioricet to take for pain. I was wondering if anyone else has taken this before during pregnancy? I am very sensitive to pain medicine, so i am concerned about taking it. What were your side effects to the medicine?

My blood pressure is normal, but they have been monitoring me more closely. Also does anyone have any kind of remedies for headaches that i may not have heard of? Thank You!

Chosen Answer:

I was prescribed Fioricet about20 hours into a 37 hour migraine… It took off the edge so I could sleep, but in the end I needed another and additional tylenol to kick the migraine to the curb. If your headaches are severe enough for the Dr to prescribe that medication you are likely to sleep right after taking it and wouldn’t really notice any side effects anyway.

It should not affect blood pressure… As far as getting rid of headaches another way… Depends on the severity…

Prior to being medicated with the Fioricet I had tried Extra Strength Tylenol, cold compresses on my head, warm baths followed by laying down to sleep in a dark quiet room… Etc…

Be careful with how much of the Fioricet you take… I took only 2 pills total… Its is usually only prescribed to pregnant women as a last resort when the benefits to the mother outweigh any possible side effects to the baby…

How often should I get CAT scans for my migraines?

I’ve been getting migraines since I was a baby, and I don’t know how often I should be getting routine CAT scans. Is it biyearly or something like that? I’d ask my pain management doctor but it’s pretty impossible to get an answer.
Thanks.
I’m on preventative medication so that’s not the issue. I’m just worried that if something did ever happen up there, there would be no way of telling whether it was an abnormality or just a regular migraine.

Chosen Answer:

I have only done CT scans or MRI scans on patients who have migranes as a tool for ruling out another process. The causes of routine migranes (many believe that chemical imbalances can cause migraines) do not show up on these scans. But, if you were having migranes due to a brain tumor, that would be seen on a scan. Once another process has been ruled out, there really is no reason to do follow up scans.

“A physical exam and lab tests may be done, not to necessarily diagnose migraine, but to rule out other causes for the headaches. Imaging tests that can produce an image of your brain such as computed tomography (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) help to rule out brain tumor or other structural causes of headaches, but are not useful for identifying migraine.”

Do migraines last several days and does pain improve if you rest or stay still?

I was wondering if migraines can last for more than a day and if you rest or stay still, does the pain decrease? And are there any common natural cures (without taking medicine) for migraines?

Chosen Answer:

Yes, it can last 2 days. Natural remedies include avoiding foods such as wine and certain cheeses, and especially, get 8 hours of sleep a night. I cannot imagine for myself trying to endure a migraine without Imitrex. It’s a non-narcotic and it really works.

Any experiences with fioricet?? I have constant tention headaches and may want to try this drug long term.?

Any experiences with fioricet???? I have constant tention headaches and may want to try this drug long term.

Chosen Answer:

hi scarface, roberta young here,

Fioricet is a very dangerous drug, because it has 3 drugs in it. Acetaminophen (aspirin), Butalbital
(a heavy duty pain killer and NARCOTIC), and Caffeine.

there have been a number of cases involving all 3 drugs, reporting (Liver Damage) and drug interactions
Caffeine has not proven effective in relieving pain, but causing aggravated incontinence, insomnia, and may lead to dependence-causing withdrawal headaches. i call it THE CEMENT SOMBRERO, it like coffee withdrawals.

the butalbital a barbituate (a narcotic). i recommend that you not start it, due to the dependency
on it, and withdrawals that occur with the drug.

you’d be better off just taking aspirin, which might upset your stomach, or worse yet lead to a
bleeding ulcer.

i recommend going to a health food store, or calling around to see who carries it. (Licorice Root)
you just keep chewing it, until your headache is gone.

better yet, get some licorice root tea, and sip at it all day, every day to prevent your headaches.

another thing you should do is massage your neck, or have someone do it for you. also, try to
find out, what’s causing your tension, and act on getting rid of the cause instead of taking drugs
for it.

take care and please stay away from drugs.

please contact me on your results and decisions

How can I get relief from sever migraines when no medicine is working?

I have been getting migraines for 2.5 years and lately they have been really bad. I had one for a month straight and the only way to get rid of it was to be hopspitalized for 5 days and get medicine through and IV, then the day after I was released I had a migraine again. I am in college and have been missing class. I have tried every kind of medicine and nothing has worked, I dont know what else to do. I get pain in the back left of my head and when it first starts it feels like my brain is tingling then it feels like there is a build up of pressure then it just throbbs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Chosen Answer:

I feel your pain.
I’ve tried billions of things over the past 6.5 years of constant headaches.
Here are my best tips:
-Find a Headache and Pain Relief Centre
-Nerve Blocks (takes the pain away completely for hours. After sucessive treatments they last longer and longer. Some people are cured by nerve blocks)
-Meditation and Belly Breathing (with practice i’m nowable to reduce the severity of my headaches/migraines.)
-Keep a pain diary. Learn your triggers.
-Never skip a meal (eat at regular times)
-Get regular sleep (same time and same amount each night)
-Drink plenty of H2O

Hope this helps.

What can cure migraines and headaches with out meds?

I suffer from really bad migraines and sinus headaches. I feel like a druggy constantly reaching for that pill bottle. Is there anything that would help headaches with out taking meds?

Chosen Answer:

Today’s modern medicine is focused on DRUGS and we know all drugs damage the body in some way. Migraines are typically due to small intestinal issues, such as food intolerances or allergies, teeth problems from infection or bad dentistry that is rampant in the U.S. and also due to insufficient livers. Sinus headaches are all part of the same root causes.

Anytime you have a sinus condition that lasts for more than 4 months medical professionals will tell you that your condition is chronic and you will not be able to “cure” it and have to live with it for the rest of your life. That is only true if you follow the typical “treat the symptom allopathic medicine route.”

A very good example of how dental problems can create this issue is to realize that the roots of a tooth grow very close to the sinus cavity. Let’s say you get a root canal. The way dentistry works is to take the cheapest methods to deal with it. Drill out the root, fill it with gutta percha, and put a crown on. The problem is that the drugs they use to deaden the nerve are AGGRESSIVELY CARCINOGENIC and are so toxic that they equal you smoking a pack of cigarettes each day for 12.9 years. And that is for just one shot of any of the aniline chemicals, except for Septocaine. All the other aniline chemicals, like novocaine, lidocaine, procaine, carbocaine, etc. all create these aniline homologs that cause cancer.

Then the person gets NICO (neuralgia induced cavitational osteonecrosis) or deterioration of the jaw bone due to bacteria infested root canal because the dentist used hydrogen peroxide to kill germs and only killed about 30% of them. The gutta percha only fills some of the canals and allows germs to multiply like crazy that migrate into the jaw bone beneath the root canal. NO PAIN is involved, so it goes ignored.

There is no reason to have to deal with migraines when you are treated by someone who knows what they are doing, not some doctor that will treat the symptoms only.

good luck to you

How do I prevent and get rid of migraines?

I have suffered from migraines since College. They are extremely debilitating. I recently switched to a job that does not offer health insurance, and have been denied two times for the migraine medication I was on before. I know eventually an insurance company will accept me, but until then I need help. No amount nor type of pill seems to help. I need to know what you know about migraine cures.
