What medication works the best for Migraines?

I get migraines all the time or what I think are migraines and don’t know what to do for them, and my next doctors appointment is not for another couple of months.

Chosen Answer:

Mirganes are caused by the nerves acting up. Take 2 cold (rather frozen) ice packs. Place one at the base of your neck/scalp (on the back of your head), and place the 2nd one over your eyes. This will decrease the swelling on the nerves, causing the migrane to go away and is cheaper and more homipathic than pumping your body with drugs.

Is Butalbital fioricet A Narcodic?

Chosen Answer:

Used for migraine headaches it is not technically a narcotic because it doesn’t have an opiate ingredient. It is considered a barbiturate. The mix in butalbital is mostly acetaminophen and caffeine, sometimes *codeine depending on type.

If you are concerned about the way it will make you feel when you take it, that can be best described as relaxed.
The caffine in this pill is to enhance pain relief and the acetaminophen and*codeine for the pain and to calm, which is necessary with a migraine!!!!!

Hope this helps!!

What does it mean when certain foods give you migraines?

Every time I drink Orange Juice(freshly squeezed does not affect me) or consume any kind of yellow cheese, I get migraines and sensitivity to light. What could this mean?

Chosen Answer:

First off, everybody’s migraines are different, from different sources, with different symptoms and different treatments or cures. Check this out… http://www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches/guide/triggers-specific-foods

Then try and figure out in your own life what the triggers are for your migraines. They can be just food, allergies, hormones, weather fronts, sensitivity to chemicals and the list goes on. You can eat to aid in preventing or treating migraines. Look it up, find what fits you. Another good site that explains migraines better is this : http://www.migraines.org/

Good luck! Your biggest help will be from self education!

How come Fiorinal is a Schedule 3 (C-III) controlled substance?

Fiorinal is just aspirin, caffeine, and butalbital, so why is it controlled? I’ve never hear of anyone abusing this before. Fioricet; which is acetaminophen, caffeine, and butalbital; is not a controlled substance. So how come Fiorinal is classified as a controlled substance and Fioricet isn’t?

Thanks for your help, please include referrences.

Chosen Answer:

I think Fioricet is a Class IV–
Good question. I believe the aspirin potentiates the effect of the barbiturate. At least that is what I was told when I asked the same question.

Esgic-Plus or Fioricet compared to Axocet (same drug without the caffeine)?

While I was pregnant, I had bad migraines that wasn’t responding to many medicines. After trying several things, my ob doctor and I found that Axocet (butabilbital with acetaminophen) worked the best for me. Ever after I’ve had my baby, I’ve continued to take this medicine when I get a bad headache (which, thank god is less frequent then when I was pregnant!)

My question is, does the esgic-plus or fioricet work better than the axocet at relieving the headache? I wasn’t originally given the caffeine version due to being pregnant. Now that I’m not pregnant, I was considering asking the doctor about the with caffeine version when I go to get my next refill.

Does the caffeine version make it kick in faster? Does it feel stronger? Typically, I don’t feel any kind of drowsy or dopey effects like I’ve heard some report. If I have a REAL bad headache and take 2 instead of 1, I’ll feel light-headed, but thats it.

Any help or personal experience would be appreciated!

Chosen Answer:

Caffeine is used in OTC drugs like Excedrin for the improvement incerebral circulation it can bring. Caffeine will add to the effect of the Axocet.

What you might do the next time you take an Axocet, isd drink it down with a cup of coffee. That will tell you if it will help or not.

Fioricet … Any Success?

I’m 12w 4d pregant, and have been having HORRIBLE migraines AT LEAST 3 times a week, and they usually last at least 24 hours, sometimes longer. I spoke with my doctor about this yesterday and he prescribed me Fioricet to hopefully help me with it. Just wondering if anyone has had any success with taking these for headaches? Doc said that sometimes they help patients and sometimes they will make it worse. He said we had 2 more options if this drug is not successful. Anyone taken them? What was the outcome for you?

Please note: I’m NOT asking if they are safe to take during pregnancy… Obviously my doctor wouldn’t have prescribed them if they could be harmful =)

Chosen Answer:

After I had my daughter I was given this for headaches.. it worked great. The never made me sleepy, which was most important since I had the new baby.

Girlfriend takes Fioricet w/ Codeine for headaches…?

My girlfriend frequently gets headaches and she was prescribed a new medication called Fioricet which has Codeine in it. One day I noticed she took 6 pills within a 6 hour period. She kept commenting on how “fvcked up” she was. I didn’t think much of it at first so I blew it off. But then she told me that she took 10 pills another day. Then I started to get onto her and lecture her like I was her father or something. I only did that because I care about her and I don’t know anything about Rx drugs so I don’t know the effects. Then she calls me today telling me her stomach is in knots, she’s got a killer headache, feels like she’s going to throw up, she’s sweating, all kinds of crap. She wanted me to look up the side effects of Fioricet and most, if not all, of what she had were all side effects. But my concern is that maybe she took so many pills that it built up quicker than normal and now she’s having a withdrawal. I told her not to take anymore of those pills. Also, I’ve noticed that she’s been having mood swings. She’ll go from really happy and nice to really irritated and moody. It literally seems to happen in a snap. And she has told me the pills don’t really help her headaches. I honestly don’t like the way they are making her act and feel. Before she took these pills, she was happier, mroe lively, and not so irritable. I told her that if she took anymore that I’m going to take the pills and hide them and/or call her doctor and tell her not to prescribe them anymore to her. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts or even any experience with Fioricet? Please share. And don’t tell me my girlfriend is a pill-popper, blah blah blah. In her teenage years, she was into drugs pretty hardcore. She said she still has that pill-popping tendency so I know the deal.
Miss Dubstep, thank you very much. Great advice. I’m heading home from work in a few minutes and I will let her know all of this. Thank you so much.

Chosen Answer:

You pretty much know the answer already.

She is obviously exceeding the recommended dose, which is 1-2 tablets every four hours as needed, not exceeding 6 tablets in a 24 hour period. Note that Fioricet (and some other pain medications) are implicated as causing repeat headaches with over-use. Fioricet also contains acetaminophen that in high doses can damage multiple organs, especially the liver and kidney.

Physical dependency is based on how long she’s been taking the pills. When physical dependence has developed, withdrawal symptoms will occur if she suddenly stops the medication. Withdrawal symptoms include: drug craving, runny nose, yawning, sweating, insomnia, weakness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle spasms, chills, irritability and pain.

My suggestion would be informing her that too much of the medication will make her headaches worse, and advise her of the dangers of the OTHER ingredients in the medication that causes permanent damage. Don’t cut her completely off the medication, but reduce her dose to 1-2 pills every four hours, as suggested on the label. If she’s not willing or able to do it herself, you may have to play parent for a bit. There are plenty of quick fixes for opiate withdrawal symptoms that will make the tapered dose easier.

As far as experience goes, opiate addiction can sneak right up on you if you don’t catch it quick. I was prescribed OxyContin for a back injury… and before you know it you’re in the hospital unconscious with depressed lungs then off to rehab.

Can I open Fioricet w/Codeine capsule?

My doctor just prescribed me Fioricet w/codeine (generic)I have never been able to swallow pills with difficulty. I just tried to take one and threw it up upon swallowing it. My question is, does anyone know (factually) if I can open it and swallow it or mix it with something like apple sauce or mix it with some juice? I don’t want to do anything that might harm myself or make it work less effectively b/c I have a raging headache. Thanks.
I appreciate your suggestion but I have an avm and have been on many different medications and seen many specialist. It caused a bleed in my cerebellum a few years ago and the blood does not pump properly through the veins in my brain. Unfortunately I will have headaches for the rest of my life. These are not typical migraines but thanks again.

Chosen Answer:

I would suggest seeing a good insurance list chiropractor so you dont’ have such bad headaches anymore. (takes 8-12 times usually) Good luck.

Anyone know about fioricet? Possible overdose…?

i found my son stumbling around the house when i got home and found out he has taken 6 fioricet at once. Then 4 hours later he said he took 6 more because he couldn’t get rid of a headache. Should i be worried (he seems ok, besides the stumbling but i know barbiturates cause dizziness) or can he sleep it off?
He is 17. Do you suggest taking him to the ER or …?
Ladylynn…if pain meds are uppers than why is he passed out snoring? And I thought barbits were downers, no?

Chosen Answer:

You didn’t say how old he is. It sounds like he’s ok, but you should call 311. (that’s like 911, but for non-emergencies.) Fioricet is a strong prescription med for migraines and pain. He’ll have a good hangover tomorrow, but I think he’ll be OK. The good thing about pain meds is that they’re uppers, so he won’t fall asleep, which is good.
I don’t think he’ll try that again! When his hangover goes away, sit him down and explain to him that taking any more than the recommend dose of any medication, does NOT help anymore. That goes for all over the counter meds like aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, or Excedrin, as well as prescription meds. Have him drink LOTS of water now, so his hangover won’t be AS bad.
If he gets headaches a lot, he should see a doctor. Best of luck! ;)

Fioricet an Ibuprofen?

I have had a Bad headache all afternoon into tonight. I finally gave up and took 3 fioricet and an Ibuprofen. The pain was bad. Now I am dizzy when I sit back and I had a brief ringing in my ear which went away in less then 20 seconds. I know I will go to sleep soon I was just wondering. It says every 4 to 6 hours so I assumed it wouldn’t hurt. I am overweight so I thought it wouldn’t affect me. Is it cause for alarm or will I sleep it off?
the sleepiness wore off now. I think it was just mental exhaustion
the sleepiness wore off now. I think it was just mental exhaustion

Chosen Answer:

You should have followed what was prescribed for you. I would recommend either calling poison control to see if a serious interaction can occur or calling your dr and tell s/he that you made a mistake. Anytime you take more than prescribed it can be harmful. Doctors base your dosage on your weight so I would assume that your doctor already did that. Please find out before you go to sleep.
